Faith or Fear

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

What if Jesus lived a life of fear not faith?

Well if Jesus had the fear of man, He would have never taught anything contrary to what the modern day teachers were teaching.  It was Leonard Ravenhill who said “if Jesus preached like we preach today, He would have never been killed.” He definitely would have played it safein His speaking and relationships with leaders.

If Jesus had the fear of rejection, He would have worked extra hard to please the crowds.  He would have only said and done things that the crowd would approve of so He could receive affirmation to counter balance His fear of rejection.  He probably would have had to water down His life to be more acceptable.  He would have worked too hard not to be misunderstood.

If He had the fear of being alone, He would have never spent any time alone in prayer and meditation.  He would have needed to be around people all the time and would have missed out on the refreshing and refilling times of quietness and solitude.

If He had a fear of the future He would have never gone to the cross.  How painful a sacrifice to endure knowing that only some would receive the free gift of salvation purchased with His death and resurrection.

One could conclude that if Jesus lived in places of fear, His impact would have greatly diminished! His followers fickle, His leadership lasting one generation, His legacy common, His courage non-existent, His life and ministry invisible…..little to no lasting change.

Did I just describe my legacy? Your legacy? Churches legacy?

I can only speak for me, I need to ramp it up and live a life of FAITH in even greater measure!  Enough of the fear, perfect love casts out all fear, so invite God who is love into those places of fear and see faith rise up!

Counting to 10

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Playing “Hide and Go Seek” with my kids, in our house, when they were very young was always a bunch of fun. Especially when my youngest daughter was little. She loved to play that game with me.

It was a game that didn’t require a lot of effort by me to play and so many times I would concede in playing “one more time”. She couldn’t count all the way to 10 in those days, so numbers ranging from 1-10 were listed in different orders every time we played. (Although, somehow she always ended on the number 10) She’d rattle off the numbers, ending on 10 and up the stairs she would climb asking in a loud voice where I was hiding.

She would have a specific order as she would perimeter sweep the 2nd floor of our house. She would first check her room asking if I was in there. Same with the boys bedroom and the bathroom. Finally she would end up in our room and instinctively walk right to the curtains where my size 10.5 feet were sticking out. She’d pull back the curtain with a confident declaration would say “I FOUND YOU!” I would say, “Camryn, you’re so brilliant, would like to play again?” She say yes and skip excitedly out the bedroom door, I’d pull the curtain back and she’d go through the counting, the perimeter sweep, and the inevitable discovery of me behind the curtain. She’d again say “I FOUND YOU” which would cue my line to say “Camryn, you’re so brilliant, would you like to play again?” This routine would happen several more times each session of “Hide and Go Seek” we would play.

Some time later as I was thinking about how Cammie and I used to play “Hide and Go Seek”, God caught me off guard with one of those memorable teaching moments. If I wanted to, I could probably beat a 4 year old in a game of “Hide and Go Seek” (hopefully). But as a Father, where’s the fun in that? The fun part was being found and the joy that filled my daughters heart when she found me.

Have you ever been in a season where you can’t find God? Can’t hear His voice? Stuck in a rut spiritually and seemingly everywhere you look, God is nowhere to be seen? I’ve felt that before, more than I would probably like to admit. But God taught me something about what to do in those seasons of what seems like a spiritually disconnected time. Like me with Camryn, God desperately wants to be found, so God always hides in the same places!!

He hides in prayer in and worship. He hides in fasting and service. He hides in quietness and meditation on His Word. He hides in encouraging words from friends and family. He hides in the all the same places we found Him before, because he really wants to be found!!

Is it that God hides, or we place too many things in front of Him that He seems hidden behind all of our busyness or stuff? Or is it both? Maybe something for us all to think about for our own lives…..

God, our Heavenly Father, wants to be found by you and to be found by me. Time to count to ten, open our eyes and go back to the spaces where we found God hiding before…..He’s there waiting to hear you say “I FOUND YOU”!

Strong and Courageous

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

One very impacting moment in my teenage years was the first time I received a prophetic word. I couldn’t believe at age 14 that God would take the time to speak to someone else just to bring an encouraging word to me. It was one of the most special moments of my life, I was that important to Him, amazing!!

A lady had taken the time to write out on a couple recipe cards Joshua 1:6-9. It connected with me so greatly. I was beginning my high school years and was looking for some much needed direction on how to navigate the high school years. I was so humbled that God could see me as a leader knowing all my shortfalls but seeing what I could become and encouraging me to chase after two major characteristics of what kind of leadership He was looking for in me….even to this day!

STRENGTH AND COURAGE!

In fact, God repeats it 3 times for Joshua as Moses has died and Joshua’s leadership of Israel has started. Moses was a leader that was constantly surrounded by miracles. Food provided every day, clothes never wore out, water from a rock, cloud by day, fire by night just to name a few. Moses was no doubt a STRONG leader and saw God’s faithfulness but God was asking for something more from Joshua, to be COURAGEOUS! In fact repeats it three times to make sure Joshua fully understood what God was looking for in this next season of leadership in Israel.

I know a lot of strong leaders. In fact I could easily fill a column full of all the STRONG leaders I know and am so blessed to know them. But the COURAGEOUS column, at least in a majority of the leaders I observe, is quite a bit smaller than the other column. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’m not in the courageous column. So many times, “be STRONG and COURAGEOUS” are right next to each other throughout the Bible and yet many of us leaders just are satisfied with being a STRONG leader. The goal is not to become just a STRONG leader but one who COURAGEOUSLY steps out in faith, in the face of fear and resistance, to lead and live the life of the disciple of Christ described in scripture.

Jesus is our leadership model, STRONG leader, for sure. COURAGEOUS, absolutely!

The question you and I have to ask ourselves, what’s the point of being a STRONG leader for God if you’re not going to be COURAGEOUS? God seems to think they should be linked together.

I guess, when I look back on how I lived my own life and how I lead others, I want to be a one who lived in both columns.

Joshua 1:9
“This is my command – be STRONG and COURAGEOUS! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

I thank God for taking me back to a start, reminding me of what it will take to be at the finish!
